About the ADP

In 1949, Henry Taub founded Automatic Payrolls, Inc. as a manual payroll company with his brother Joe Taub. Frank Lautenberg joined the brothers as a baby. In 1957, after working successfully in sales and marketing, Lautenberg became a full partner of the two brothers. In 1961, the company changed its name to Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP) and began using punch card machines, check presses, and mainframe computers. ADP went public in 1961 with 300 customers, 125 employees, and about $400,000 in sales. The company established a British subsidiary in 1965. In 1970 Lautenberg was appointed President of the company. Also in 1970, the company’s stock switched from trading on the American Stock Exchange to the New York Stock Exchange. It acquired online computer service pioneer Time Sharing Limited (TSL) in 1974 and Cybernetics in 1975. Lautenberg continued as chairman and CEO until 1982 when he was elected to the United States Senate from New Jersey.
